What is Sand Filter?
Sand filters is a water treatment equipment that uses sand layer as filter medium, mainly used to remove suspended matter, particulate impurities and some organic matter in water. Its working principle is to intercept impurities when water flows through the sand layer through physical interception, adsorption and sedimentation, thereby purifying water quality.

Basic structure and composition
- Filter layer: usually composed of quartz sand, anthracite or activated sand of different particle sizes, laid in layers according to particle size (the upper layer is coarser and the lower layer is finer).
- Support layer: located below the sand layer, composed of gravel or pebbles, to prevent filter material loss and evenly distribute water flow.
- Water distribution system: top water inlet and bottom water outlet to ensure that water flows evenly through the filter layer.
- Backwash system: used to regularly remove intercepted impurities and restore filtration capacity (expand the sand layer and wash away dirt through reverse water flow).
Classification of sand filters
- Single-layer sand filter: only used for quartz sand.
- Multi-layer sand filter: combination of anthracite, sand, garnet, etc. to improve filtration accuracy.
- Active sand filter: Add active coating to enhance adsorption capacity.
Sand filter is a basic equipment in water treatment system and is often used in conjunction with other technologies (such as activated carbon adsorption) to achieve a more comprehensive purification effect.
