What Devices are Included in an Ultrafiltration System?

An ultrafiltration system is an integrated solution, typically consisting of multiple functional units working together to ensure the long-term stable operation and high efficiency of the membrane module.

As a technical expert specializing in solid-liquid separation and filtration equipment, JX FILTRATION will break down the main components and functions of a typical ultrafiltration system. A standard ultrafiltration system can be summarized into the following four modules:

Self-cleaning filter
1. Pretreatment Module

This is the first and most important line of defense for protecting expensive ultrafiltration membranes. Its purpose is to remove large particles, suspended solids, and colloids that may clog or foul the membrane.

Core Equipment:

  • Self-cleaning filter/backwash filter: Typically used as the main pretreatment, it automatically removes larger suspended solids (such as silt, algae, and fibers) from the raw water. The filtration accuracy is typically 100-500 microns.
  • Media filter (such as a quartz sand filter) or multi-media filter: Used for deep removal of turbidity, colloids, and some organic matter, reducing the SDI (Soil Degradation Index).
  • Disc filter/bag filter: As a fine security filter, it is installed at the inlet of the ultrafiltration membrane to intercept tiny particles that may leak from the pretreatment process (the filtration accuracy is typically 50-200 microns).
2. Core Filtration Module

This is the ultrafiltration membrane unit itself.

Core Equipment:

  • Ultrafiltration membrane assembly: The "heart" of the system. Based on form, it is mainly divided into: hollow fiber membranes, spiral wound membranes, and tubular membranes.
  • Membrane Pressure Vessel/Shell: A pressure-bearing outer shell that houses and protects the membrane elements. (Note: This component is pressure equipment; export to the EU requires compliance with the PED Directive.)
3. Circulation and Power Module

Provides the water flow power and necessary circulation flushing for the system.

Core Equipment:

  • Feed Pump/Pump: Provides the pressure and flow rate required for system operation.
  • Circulation Pump: In some cross-flow filtration designs, maintains the flow velocity at the membrane surface to prevent contaminant deposition.
  • Backwash Pump: Specifically used for periodic backwashing to remove contaminants from the membrane surface. Typically requires high flow rate and low head.
  • Chemical Cleaning Pump: Connected to the Chemical Injection Tank (CIP) for periodic or restorative cleaning.
  • Valves: Including pneumatic/electric valves, regulating valves, check valves, etc., used to automatically switch between different process flows such as operation, forward washing, backwashing, and chemical cleaning.
4. Post-treatment and Control Module

Ensuring that the produced water meets standards and that the system operates automatically.

Core Equipment:

  • Reverse Osmosis Feed Pump and Tank: If ultrafiltration is used as a pretreatment step for reverse osmosis, a product water tank and booster pump are required.
  • Chemical Dosing System
  • PLC Automatic Control System: The brain of the system. Controls the sequential operation of all pumps and valves, achieving fully automatic operation, timed backwashing, air scouring, chemically enhanced backwashing, and online monitoring (pressure, flow rate, turbidity, pH, etc.).
  • Instruments: Pressure gauges/transmitters, flow meters, turbidity meters, pH meters, etc.
