How to choose activated carbon in the water treatment process?
Activated carbon is a kind of microcrystalline carbon material with black appearance, developed internal pore structure, large surface area and strong adsorption capacity. It is a commonly used adsorbent, catalyst or catalyst carrier.
Classification
- Wooden activated carbon: made of wood chips, charcoal, etc.
- Nutshell activated carbon: made of coconut shell, walnut shell, apricot core shell, etc.
- Coal-based activated carbon: made of lignite, peat, bituminous coal, anthracite, etc.
- Petroleum-based activated carbon, for example, pitch-based spherical activated carbon.
- Regenerated carbon made from waste carbon.
Selection of activated carbon for water treatment
1. Granularity (10-24 mesh 2.0-0.8mm): ≥95%
Note: the smaller the particles of activated carbon, the larger the specific surface area, that is, the better the adsorption effect.
2. Iodine adsorption value: ≥1000mg/g
Note: the higher the iodine adsorption value, the stronger the adsorption capacity of activated carbon.
3. Specific surface area: 1000---1200m2/g
Note: If take 1g of activated carbon and expand all the pore walls into a plane, this area will reach 1000 square meters (that is, the specific surface area is 1000g/m2). The larger the specific surface area, the better the adsorption effect of activated carbon.
4. Decolorizing ability of methylene blue: ≥10mL/g
5. Wear resistance: ≥95%
Note: the higher the strength, the better the performance of activated carbon.
6. Loss on drying: ≤10%
Note: Loss on drying refers to moisture. The lower the value, the better the quality of activated carbon.
7. Ignition residue: ≤3%
Note: Ignition residue refers to ash content, the lower the value, the better the quality of activated carbon.
8. Filling proportion: 0.48---0.55g/mL
Note: Filling specific gravity and refers to density. Generally, the lower the density, the better the adsorption capacity of activated carbon.
